My Beginners Approach into the Blogging World.

I created this blog as a way to document my love of crafting and learning new things. The internet has been a valuable tool for me in my learning process and has opened up a whole new online world to me. I've discovered that along with my passion for DIY and crafts, I've embraced the social media channels that have helped grow my interests.

With that said, it's been a steep learning curve for me. Unlike my teenage daughters, who have basically grown up with the internet and apps, I am relatively new to them. To say that I have found learning about it overwhelming, would be an understatement. There are so many sites and courses and a plethora of information, which is amazing but I kept not knowing exactly where to begin.

I figured that maybe if I document my journey with what I learn along the way, I can look back at the path that I've taken and maybe someone else will find it useful. Or perhaps others will be experiencing the same thing and we can continue to learn from each other.

My blog will most likely evolve over time as I gain new knowledge. Presently, I will write about DIY, painting wood signs, decorating cookies, and everything I learn about Social Media Apps and the blogging world. My Christmas wish list includes a Cricut Maker and I can't wait to unbundle it and begin sharing my experiences with it. I hope to create a separate category for just that, documenting my ups and downs, wins and fails as I attempt crafts with it.

Everything I read about creating blogs proposes that having some goals in mind can really aid the site. With that said, I have been keeping a growing list of goals/ideas that I want to incorporate and achieve with Jennifers DIY blog. This list will continue to grow over time and perhaps I can turn it into a monthly blog post or something. For now, my goals are very broad and general. I hope to streamline them as I grow my blog and (my confidence).

  • To document my learning with Social Media and Blogging

  • To create step by step craft tutorials

  • Write 1 - 2 blog posts weekly

  • Get page views on the blog

  • Getting my first comment (other than from my family)

  • Learn programs that can assist my social media (i.e. Canva is the first design platform that I read about for creating pictures of things to accompany my blog posts and it's free and easy to use)

  • Learn about SEO ( I read about how important it is, but I haven't the slightest idea about it and find myself a little wary of it, but looking forward to the challenge)

  • Enjoy and have fun (Perhaps the most important goal! And to always remind myself that I don't want this to turn into "work". I want to enjoy this process and have others that find this site to feel the same way.)

What about earning an income? Well, of course, that would be amazing. Who wouldn't want that? I'm not looking at this though as a business opportunity at the moment. At the very least, if I can generate some extra cash to cover my crafting expenses, that would be incredible. For me, at the moment, my incentive is purely from a learning standpoint and being able to share with a community of like-minded people who have similar interests and gathering information from them along the way.
